DUNC Gray Velodrome

Objective

Velodromes have a tendency to be substantially internally focused buildings with little connection from within to their external setting. By contrast, the objective here was to provide a velodrome which allowed spectators to orient themselves to the park setting while experiencing the excitement of velodrome cycling. This project was undertaken as a joint venture consultancy in association with Ryder SJPH.

Outcome

  • Permanent seating for over 3000 spectators with a temporary Olympic seating design for approximately 5000 spectators.
  • The world’s first velodrome track and seating to be fully documented and tested in virtual space
  • Utilises natural ventilation for thermal comfort of occupants
  • Largest span steel shell roof structure in the southern hemisphere
